What are search intent and The types of search intent in SEO

Although there are countless search terms, there are only four types of searches:

  • Informative
  • Commercial/Preferential Investigation
  • Transnational
  • Navigation

Some of you may be asking, that’s fine and good, but how can we understand?

Here are examples of each one that suggests search intent.

It is important to keep in mind, though, that searches are not binary — many may fall into a variety of categories.

Informative

It is generally the intent of users to find answers! The content could be in the format of a tutorial, recipe, or explanation. It is one of the most popular searches, allowing users to search an unlimited number of queries. Of course, all questions are queries.

Preferential/Commercial Investigation

If they are ready to buy, users type a commercial inquiry. When people search for products, companies, or services. They are beyond the informational phase of the process and have narrowed it down to a few choices. Here, users often compare brands and products to find the right one for them.

Note:

Transactional

Transactional searches are intended to lead to a purchase. These days, users aren’t looking for the product, but where to buy it.

Navigable

The searchers want to get to a particular site, so they prefer Google searches rather than typing in the URL. Additionally, the user may not be able to find the URL or a specific page. As a result, search terms are often brand or website names with additional details to help users find a specific page.

Determining search intent

Think about keyword modifiers

In summary, the modifiers to keywords provide useful information about search intent. Yet, it’s not enough to know the keywords. You might be thinking, in terms of keyword research, where do you find these terms?

Luckily, there are a variety of reliable keyword research tools available. Their filtering capabilities are most useful here since you can filter out terms with certain modifiers.

Moreover, you can filter keywords based on SERPs. When looking for information, try searching for keywords under knowledge panels, related topics, and featured content.

Check out the SERPs

Another way to identify search intent is to research the search engine results. Enter the keyword you’re looking for to see what Google suggests. You should be able to tell from the results what Google considers relevant for each term.

We’ll take a look at the search results in light of intent.
